Free Food — at a PriceJill Ryan/World Vision Update
Nomads and laborers wait outside a charitable restaurant in Ahmedabad, India.
Description
India has one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, but many of its people still experience hunger. According to the Global Hunger Index, more than 40 percent of the world's underweight children live in India. Often the only way these children — and their parents — survive is through regular donations from other Indians.
In the city of Ahmedabad in India's western state of Gujarat, the poor often line up for a free meal at restaurants that blur the line between entrepreneurship and charity.
